Modular In-Law Suites: The 3 Pros and 1 Con

Whether your existing home is modular or not, many people who want to build an in-law suite on their property end up using modular construction, and you should to. In-law suites are also called secondary suites, granny suites and mother-in-law suites.

The 3 Pros

  • It’s less disruptive! Since your home is right next door, it is in your best interest to use modular building since the on-site construction time is significantly reduced. This is better for you and your home, but also better for your relationship with your neighbors!
  • Keep your property intact! Depending on the layout of your land, you may have to sacrifice a patch of grass for the crane to do its work, but you won’t have building materials lying around, a port-a-potty killing a 5×5 patch of grass, or excessive dust and debris from on-site construction coating your entire house.

The 1 Con

  • It’s faster! While this is definitely a positive, reducing the costs of construction, the costs of a loan, and the general stress that comes with construction, it also means that your in-laws will be on your doorstep that much sooner.

Secondary construction on your property doesn’t have to be for the in-laws. Other popular uses are for pool houses, secondary living areas, or even a secluded man-cave!
